Where Does Popcorn Come From?

Popcorn is a delicious, savory treat that's suitable for all ages. From where is this tasty snack? It may surprise you. Popcorn is made from the same type of corn that sweetcorn is, but it's made from one thing: it pops when heated to the right temperature. This quality is only found in Zea mays everta corn. Other varieties will stick to your pan when you heat them up.

A brief history

It wasn't as new for humans to discover corn. Archaeologists discovered that popcorn has been known to people for thousands of years. In Mexico, for example, theyve found remnants of popcorn that dates to around 3600 BC! The earliest recorded mention of a popped kernel dates back to 1500BC, when an Egyptian poem describes pieces popping in oil-filled bronze vessels while heating up on hot coals. This may have been how our ancestors made their invention possible.

Where is popcorn grown?

It is most commonly found in Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa, and Nebraska. One 30-acre plot can produce around 3 million kernels per year!
